Tips for Taking Motor Vehicle Accident Photos

Why Photos Are Important in a Motor Vehicle Accident Case

Photographs provide hard evidence that can support your account of what happened at the scene of the accident, as well as any injuries or damages you may have sustained. Having photo proof of what occurred can be invaluable if you decide to pursue legal action against the other party involved in the accident. Taking clear, comprehensive photos will give you additional proof if there are any disputes over who was responsible for the crash or what the damages are.

How to Take Photos After a Motor Vehicle Accident

First and foremost, it is important to be safe when taking photos at an accident site. This means staying away from active traffic or anything else that could cause additional injury or damage. If possible, try to take photos from a distance instead of getting too close to the wreckage.

Once you have established a safe position for taking pictures, make sure to capture as much detail as possible. Also, make sure to use flash if needed so that all details are clearly visible in your pictures.

Document Damage to Your Car

It is important to take pictures of your car from multiple angles so that you have an accurate visual representation of the damage. Make sure to include close-up shots of any dents, scratches, or broken parts.

You should also take pictures of any personal items in your car that may have been damaged or thrown out during the crash. If you had passengers in your car, make sure to get their permission before taking photos of them or their belongings.

Capture the Scene

Take wide shots from multiple angles so that you have a clear record of what the scene looked like when the accident occurred. Make sure to include images that show all cars involved in the crash and any other features such as signs, traffic lights, barriers, or obstructions that may have contributed to causing the accident.

If possible, try and capture landmarks, such as buildings or street signs, so that there is no confusion about where exactly it occurred. Additionally, if there are any witnesses present at the time of the crash, you should ask for their contact information in case they need to be called upon later for testimony.

Photograph Any Injuries

If anyone was injured in the accident, it’s important to document those injuries. Take photos immediately following the incident as well as several weeks later once they have healed (partially or completely). These photos will serve as evidence when filing an insurance claim or lawsuit against negligent parties.

Be aware though that you should get consent from injured parties before taking these photos of them, even if they were a passenger in your vehicle. If they are too incapacitated or unconscious after having been injured in an automobile accident, you can still ask them later whether they are okay with you taking photos.
